Learn to Skate

Lace up your skates and join our HYCC Skating School taught by USFSA certified instructors. Our Learn to Skate makes it easy and exciting for kids, teens, and adults to step on the ice with confidence through age-appropriate classes, energetic instructors, and a proven curriculum, skaters learn everything from their very first glides to crossovers, spins, and more!

HYCC SKATING SCHOOL: CLINIC POLICIES
- Classes are 45 minutes in length and run for seven weeks unless otherwise noted.
- Figure skates with toe picks are strongly recommended for all Figure Skating Clinics, including the Tot Program. Families are encouraged to purchase their own skates. Rental skates are available free of charge for Tots through Basic 1.
- Participants should wear gloves and hats. A warm sweater or short jacket is recommended to allow for better mobility on the ice.
- Helmets are required for all participants ages 6 and under. Helmets are required for all skaters
- Proper behavior is required on the ice at all times to ensure a safe and productive learning environment. Participants must be able to listen and follow instructions.
- Parents are not permitted near lesson areas or on the ice during class. Please remain away from the glass and rink boards to minimize distractions for skaters.
- Attendance is taken during each class. Participants who miss more than half of the sessions will not be eligible for testing. No exceptions will be made.
- Punctuality is important. Please ensure your child arrives on time for each lesson.
- Parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to remain in the facility during lessons in case of emergency.
- If a child leaves the ice due to cold, please have them stay in the warming area for 5–10 minutes (or until warmed up) before returning to the ice.
- Practice outside of scheduled lessons is encouraged and can be done during public skating sessions. Monthly schedules are available in the rink office.
- Weather-related cancellations will be communicated via email, the HYCC website, and social media.
- Instructors reserve the right to place participants in the appropriate skill level.
- Children who are in Kindergarten or age 5 and are first-time participants should register for Basic 1.
Registration Information:
- Walk-in registration hours are Monday through Friday, 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM, at 141 Bassett Lane, Hyannis, MA 02601.
- Online registration is available beginning at 8:45 AM on the first day of registration for Residents and Non-Residents and ongoing until the program is full.
Requirements:
Participants must be 3 or 4 for Tots and must be 5 for Basic levels by the start of the program.
Rental skates are available. Helmets are required for all participants 6 years old and younger. We also recommend helmets for beginner level participants (Tots, Basic 1 & Basic 2). Parents are strongly encouraged to stay at the HYCC during all LTS classes. Only registered participants and HYCC Instructors are allowed on the ice. All participants will be registered with United States Figure Skating. Additional program information will be provided at the first class.
USFS Membership
All participants in the Learn to Skate program are required to hold a current U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) membership. This membership is valid for the current membership year (July 1–June 30) and is a required component of registration. Participants may register for a USFS membership independently and provide their membership number during program registration, or select the membership as an add-on option and have it processed on their behalf.

Fees:
Residents $100 / Non-Resident $110 $18.50 USFSA Membership if not already.
Payment in full must be received prior to the start of the program. Financial Aid is available for qualified households. Forms are located on the Recreation/HYCC websites or at the front desk of the Hyannis Youth & Community Center.

- Please check specific program dates, times, and locations. HYCC staff will contact participants for any changes to the program.
Refund Policy:
- Prior to the start of the program, refunds will be given minus a $10 Administration Fee. Refunds are not issued on or after the start of the program.
